The FDA Confirms the Dangers of Taking Male Enhancement Drugs

The United States Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, recently posted 20 public notifications regarding tainted male enhancing drugs that are being sold online.

In the warnings, the FDA notifies consumers that its test center has uncovered a concealed drug in many of the supposed male enhancing products. In most cases, the hidden medicine is sildenafil, which is the active substance in erectile dysfunction drugs. The FDA is telling men to stop taking these products and toss them in the trash.

According to the FDA, men who take pharmaceutical nitrates to treat life-threatening conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease are at risk when they ingest a male enhancing substance that contains sildenafil. If a male takes both substances, the combination may cause a dangerous dip in his blood pressure. In fact, one prominent urologist stated that the medication blend could result in death.

Continuing Sales

Despite the FDA’s warnings, numerous Internet sites continue to sell male enhancing products that include hidden doses of sildenafil. In 2011, the FDA declared deceptive practices against just two male enhancing products. During 2012, the number rose to 15 while in 2013, the FDA placed 33 products on the list.

Dr. Drogo K. Montague, the director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Genital Urinary Reconstruction, said, “The problem is, the FDA does not have the degree of regulation over natural, herbal supplements that they really should have.” He also confirmed that many of the men who are buying these drugs are not suffering from erectile dysfunction. Instead, they want larger penises.

On a related note, one of the FDA’s advisory panels issued confirmation that only men who suffer from testicle malfunction because of a medical disorder should use testosterone replacement treatments. Research shows that more men are seeking prescriptions to treat sexual dysfunction because they are facing middle age and are looking for ways to delay the natural consequences that come with growing older.

Even with the onslaught of FDA alerts, a number of domestic and international sites still sell the dangerous supplements. Reports show that of the 20 products on the FDA warning list, 18 are still for sale. In its alerts, the federal agency has called out a few specific websites that sell the products. However, one company reported that it did not receive notification about the alert until weeks after the warnings were first issued. The company confirmed that it would have to call consumers to tell them to stop taking the substances.
